Manuel Marta, MCIC

Manny, as he’s commonly known, was born Manuel Rebelo Da Silva Marta near Vila Real in northern Portugal on January 21, 1955 and immigrated with his family to Canada in 1960. After growing up in Sarnia, Ont., he attended Western University in London, Ont., graduating with a bachelor of science degree in chemistry in 1978 and a bachelor of engineering science in chemical engineering in 1981. Marta started his professional career with Union Carbide Canada Ltd. and then eventually worked for NOVA Chemicals, both in Southwestern Ontario. His career which spans 31 years, including 20 years in process safety related roles, has included various responsibilities involving process design -project engineer, distribution engineer-transportation of dangerous goods co-coordinator, unit process engineer, environmental engineer, loss prevention standards senior technical editor, and process safety engineer. Within NOVA Chemicals, Marta is a member of various corporate committees that includes the Process Safety and Risk Services Team, Loss Prevention Standards Committee, and the Facility Change Management process steering committee. In addition, he is also a member of the (regional) Manufacturing East Process Safety and Risk Management Council. Externally, he is a member of the Chemical Institute of Canada and actively supports the CSChE PSM Committee. He is also a member of the Minerva Canada Summer Institute steering committee and is the 2012 recipient of Minerva Canada Education Award of Honour and inductee into Minerva’s Education Hall of Fame. Marta is a licensed professional engineer in the province of Ontario.

Terms of Reference

This award is presented to an individual who has made outstanding contributions in Canada to process safety and loss management.

Deadline: December 1 of each year

Sponsor: AON Canada

Award: A framed scroll, cash prize of $1,500

In selecting the recipient of the award, the Committee will consider primarily the direct influence of the nominee’s Process Safety and Loss Management (PSLM) work to the prevention of major industrial accidents in Canada. Meritorious performance of an administrative or indirect nature shall receive secondary consideration.

All nominations will remain in force for three years. Nominators are responsible for keeping the record of the nominee up to date and complete.

The award shall be presented annually unless the committee considers that no suitable candidate has been nominated.

The award shall be presented annually at the Canadian Chemical Engineering Conference. The recipient will be asked to present an award lecture.
