Stephen Loeb, FCIC

Stephen Loeb was born in London, England and moved to Canada as a child – he grew up in Oakville, Ont.. Loeb completed honours BSc in 1977 and PhD in 1982 in chemistry at the University of Western Ontario under the mentorship of Chris Willis and then conducted postdoctoral research with Martin Cowie at the University of Alberta. He started his academic career in 1983 at the University of Winnipeg before moving to the University of Windsor as an associate professor in 1990. In 1996, Loeb was promoted to professor. In 1997 he became a Fellow of the CIC. He was awarded a Tier 1, Canada Research Chair in 2001, named University Professor in 2004 and elected FRSC(UK) in 2007. He has served on NSERC, CFI and EPSRC(UK) review panels and the editorial board of the Canadian Journal of Chemistry. Loeb is currently a member of the international advisory boards for Chemical Society Reviews, Organic & Biomolecular Chemistry, Supramolecular Chemistry, and Supramolecular Catalysis. His current research interests are in the area of supramolecular inorganic chemistry, in particular metalloreceptors for anion recognition and the inclusion of mechanically interlocked molecules into solid state materials.

This award is presented to a scientist who has made a distinguishing contribution to the fields of inorganic chemistry or electrochemistry while working in Canada.

Award: A framed scroll, $2,000 cash and up to $1,000 for travel to present the lecture, if required

The recipient will be required to present an award lecture at the Canadian Chemistry Conference and Exhibition.

Membership in the Institute is not a prerequisite for this award.

All nominations will remain in force for three years. Nominators are responsible for keeping the record of the nominee up to date and complete.

• Past two winners of the Rio Tinto Alcan Award

The award shall be presented annually unless the Committee considers that no suitable candidate has been nominated.
